
UL Certification
UL is the abbreviation of Underwriter Laboratories Inc. UL Safety Testing Institute is the most authoritative organization in the United States and also the largest civil organization engaged in safety testing and identification in the world. It is an independent, profit-making, professional institution that conducts experiments for public safety. It uses scientific testing methods to study and determine whether various materials, devices, products, equipment, buildings, etc. are harmful to life and property and the degree of harm; Determine, prepare and issue corresponding standards and materials that can help reduce and prevent the loss of life and property, and carry out fact-finding business at the same time. UL certification is a non-mandatory certification in the United States, mainly for the detection and certification of product safety performance, and its certification scope does not include the EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) characteristics of products.
Necessity of UL certification
The products sold in the United States market need non-mandatory UL certification. Both the products in the United States and those exported to other countries need to undergo UL certification tests. We can see that many electronic products on the market have UL certification marks, which is the test of conduction and radiation of products, which is of great significance in the United States market, UL certification is an important passport and pass in the United States market. Only this product can enter the United States market smoothly.
UL certified product range
Electronic and electrical, mechanical or electromechanical products
Any electronic, electrical, mechanical or electromechanical product with UL mark indicates that the product has met the low requirements of the generally recognized product safety standards of the United States and Canada. It is tested to meet the relevant product safety standards, and also means that the manufacturer agrees to accept strict regular inspection to ensure the consistency of product quality, and can be sold to the markets of the United States and Canada.
Submittals required for UL certification
- Application form for case opening (our company provides customers to fill in);
- Company name and address;
- Operating instructions, including product description, detailed application introduction, electrical rating, etc;
- List of components and materials of the product, and the UL certification number (ULFileNo.) obtained;
- A diagram that illustrates electrical or electronic circuits;
- Materials or components that may be replaced in the future.
UL certification application process
- Applicant submits relevant company and product information
Written application: You should request UL to test your products in writing.
Company information: provide detailed and accurate names, addresses, contact persons, postal codes, telephone numbers and faxes of the following units in both Chinese and English.
(1) Application company: the company that applies for product testing and is responsible for all engineering service costs
(2) Listed companies: companies listed in various product catalogs published by UL
(3) Production factory: manufacturer and producer of products.
- Product data Product data shall be provided in English. First, determine whether your product is within the scope of UL testing
(1) Product name: provide the full name of the product.
(2) Product model: list the model, variety or classification number of all products to be tested in detail.
(3) Intended use of the product: for example, family, office, factory, coal mine, ship, etc.
(4) Parts list: list the parts and components, model (classification number), rated value and manufacturer’s name of the product in detail. For insulating materials, please provide the name of the materials, such as GEPolycarbonate, LexanType104. When the part has been UL certified or recognized, please prove the specific model of the part and indicate its UL file number.
(5) Electrical performance: for electronic and electrical products. Provide electrical diagram (circuit diagram) and electrical performance table.
(6) Structure diagram: For most products, it is necessary to provide the structure diagram or explosion diagram, ingredient list, etc.
(7) Product photos, instructions for use, safety and other items or installation instructions.
- People make decisions based on the product information provided
When the product data is complete, UL engineers will make the following decisions based on the data: the UL standard on which the test is based, the engineering cost of the test, the time of the test, the number of samples, etc., and notify you in writing, and send the formal application form and tracking service agreement to your company. The cost limit indicated in the application form is the maximum engineering cost estimated by UL based on the test items. Without your written authorization, the cost limit cannot be exceeded.
- Remittance and return of application forms and samples by the applicant company
The applicant for UL certification shall sign the application form and the tracking service agreement, and send the form back to UL company. At the same time, the sample shall be sent by bank remittance, post office or express mail. Please give appropriate description (such as name and model) to the sample sent for inspection. Please send the application form and sample separately. For each application project, UL will assign a unique project number (Project No.) to indicate the project number and the name of the application company when remitting, sending samples and application forms, so as to facilitate UL’s check.
Factory inspection time and validity period of UL certification
Conventional products are 3-4 weeks, which can be expedited, and expedited products need to pay extra fees; UL factory audit is conducted four times a year, including quarterly audit and annual audit. If the product standards remain unchanged and continue to pass the annual audit, it is always valid.
UL certification review
Before the first shipment of UL certified products, the local and provincial China Import and Export Commodity Inspection Bureau (CCIC) authorized by UL shall send personnel to the factory for review. We also need to track and check every year.
matters needing attention
- The minimum height of the registered trademark shall be 3/64 inch.
- When the diameter of the outer circle of the UL mark is less than 3/8 inch, the registered trademark symbol can be ignored if it is not legible under naked eyes.
- The mark can be directly and fixed on the unchanged product by stamping, molding, ink printing, screen printing or similar methods.
- Acquisition of marks: manufacturers can reprint or obtain from UL authorized dealers.
