ETL Certification

ETL is the abbreviation of Electronic Testing Laboratories, founded by Thomas Edison in 1896, and is the NRTL (National Accreditation Laboratory) recognized by OSHA (Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration). After more than 100 years, the ETL logo has been widely recognized and accepted by major retailers and manufacturers in North America, and enjoys a high reputation like UL. ETL inspection mark Any electrical, mechanical or electromechanical product with ETL inspection mark indicates that it has been tested to meet relevant industry standards.

ETL product certification scope

Electronic and electrical, mechanical or electromechanical products.

As long as any electronic, electrical, mechanical or electromechanical product bears the ETL mark, it means that the product has met the minimum requirements of the generally recognized product safety standards of the United States and Canada. It is tested to meet the relevant product safety standards, and also means that the manufacturer agrees to accept strict regular inspection to ensure the consistency of product quality, and can be sold to the markets of the United States and Canada.

ETL certification test method

  1. Leakage current test: the sample used for leakage current test has not been tested before
  2. Normal temperature rise: test method: thermocouples: 24-30AWG thermocouples are required by the standard (30AWG currently used in the laboratory)
  3. Leakage current test after damp state: general test conditions: T=32+/- 2 ° C, RH=88 ± 2%. Duration: after 48 hours, take it out for leakage current test test conditions: T=20~30 ° C, RH=93+/- 3%
  4. Withstand voltage test: generally products without double insulation and grounding requirements: 1000V/1min (the target voltage climb time of the equipment is set to 5 seconds, the cutoff current is set to 8.3mA, and then it is kept for 1 minute under the target voltage)

ETL certification data preparation

At present, there are two ways to obtain the ETL certificate. One is to transfer the CB test report, or apply directly. The required documents are as follows:

  1. Application Form
  2. Copy of CB test certificate (not required for direct application)
  3. Copy of CB test report (not required for direct application)
  4. Samples (4-8)
  5. Other relevant test results and product data, such as product description, photos, component list, product performance and specifications, circuit schematic diagram, etc. (If it is transferred through the CB report, the difference test is required)

In addition, unless otherwise specified, the above information should be provided in English, and for product applications of multiple models, please provide the information of each model separately.

ETL certification process and cycle

  1. Pre-test, simple product 1 week
  2. It takes one week to open the case, pay in time and sort out the data
  3. Witness test: 1 week
  4. After the witness is completed, there is no problem. A qualified letter (control number) will be sent out about 2 weeks to apply for factory review
  5. Factory review passed and certificate issued

The preparation time of data and samples is 5-6 weeks, which can be expedited, and the expedited need to pay additional fees.

ETL certified factory inspection

  1. ETL needs to carry out factory inspection before issuing the certificate, and then will carry out irregular follow-up factory inspection every quarter. Besides the factory inspection fee, ETL also needs to pay the certificate and license fee quarterly.
  2. If necessary, the inspector can witness the retest of the product or the laboratory test after sampling.
  3. The licensee must sign a legal contract (service agreement) with ETL, which clearly stipulates the responsibilities of the manufacturer and the conditions for continuous ETL listing and the use of ETL logo. The safety sign factory inspection of products entering the U.S. market and the Canadian market needs to check the ETL certification of the United States four times, while the Canadian market needs to check twice a year; For both, four times a year.
