BIS Certification

After India’s independence, the government established the Indian Standards Institute (ISI) in New Delhi and began to implement the product certification system (ISI logo). On April 1, 1987, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) officially replaced the Indian Standards Institute as the statutory national standards and certification authority in India. Since then, all products listed in the compulsory catalogue must be certified and affixed with ISI logo before they can enter the Indian market for legal sale.

Operation process:

The operation of ISI certification in India is very complex, and the cycle is basically 7~8 months. The following four steps are roughly required:

(1) Data submission

The manufacturer needs to prepare about 16 copies of data such as application form, business license, test equipment list, manufacturing equipment list, test report, etc., and send the original paper to the Bureau of Indian Standards after signing and sealing, and obtain the application number.

(2) Factory inspection

After completing the data review, BIS will assign Indian officials to visit the manufacturer for factory inspection. The duration of factory inspection is determined according to Indian standards and the manufacturer’s testing capacity, and on-site sampling will be carried out and sent to an authorized laboratory in India for testing.

(3) Sample test

After receiving the sample from the authorized laboratory in India, the sample will be tested and the test report will be submitted to the Bureau of Indian Standards.

(4) Issue certificate

After receiving the audit report, test report and other data, BIS will review all documents and issue ISI certificate.
